Job Reflective Narrative
In order to graduate every Lindsay High School student needs to job shadow an employer as part of their Senior project. On April 22, 2016, I job showed Cynthia Gomez from the Delta Vista Manor/Monte Vista Manor Apartments. I chose this position as my father works in the same company and I had noticed her before. As a result, through brief encounters I was able to see the type of work that she was in charge of. This interested me as I thought it could be beneficial to my interests.
To begin with, I arrived to her office located at the Delta Vista Manor Apartments briefly before 8 am. Once in her office I began to ask her about her actual positon in the company in order to establish a better idea of what she did. What was interesting about her job was that she served as both the company manger and a financial manager. For this reason, she served several different purposes throughout the day. My time spent there was focused solely in her office although that isn’t always the case. Throughout the day she answered phone calls and spent her time making calculations related to the business. For example, in order to determine a tenant’s proper financial charges, she first had to determine whether or not the person was employed. During this process several factors came into play such as having to confirm salary and their number of children if they had any. Above this, tenants occasionally came into her office with casual questions. Overall, the day was spent accounting in her office while also serving manager duties.
Moving forward, when I initially asked if she could host me I was mostly interested in the financial aspect of it. However, her position as the financial manager combined with her role as a company manager made the position different. Although it wasn’t initially my interest it did provide an insightful experience as to how many several different positions are available related to finances. I liked how the seemingly hybrid positon made it more interesting than just simply accounting and financial managing. However, the same reason I enjoyed it was also the same reason I disliked it. This is because I would have still enjoyed an experience that involved solely dealing finances.
To sum up, this experience overall still encourages me to pursue this general career field. I still believe that anything business related including accounting could still be a possible career path for me to pursue. The fact that this position was mixed only further showed me that these types of positions and opportunities could come in various different choices. For this reason I am still over all satisfied with the experience and it has only improved my search area.
